A survey has found that 43% of UK shoppers believe the best way to reduce food waste is to improve food planning, says IGD, a think-tank for the food industry. ‘Beyond Packaging: Food Waste in the Home', a survey that explored shoppers' attitudes to waste, found that nearly half the respondents said the majority of food that is wasted is due to ‘bad management'. According to IGD: “It is recognised by the greatest number of shoppers that the best way to reduce food waste it to improve planning. While this is primarily an area that needs to be addressed by the individual householder, the food industry could potentially facilitate this through information provision on providing shoppers with tools that enable them to plan better." Approximately 75% of shoppers also said they “feel guilty" about throwing away food.

THRONE SPEECH 2007/2008 BY HIS EXCELLENCY THE MOST HON. PROFESSOR ...

As we begin a new Parliamentary Year, the Administration and the people of Jamaica can be proud of our competent performance in hosting the Opening Ceremony and the other events of the ICC CWC 2007. The officials, volunteers, members of Security Forces and the Jamaican people, in general, can take credit for these achievements.

The spirit of volunteerism was reflected not only in the Competition itself but the involvement of some of our religious denominations assisting with the cleaning up of the country.

In regard to the ensuing Legislative Year, the Government proposes to take a number of actions to enhance the social, economic and political development of the country.

It is proposed to secure passage of a number of Bills which have already been placed on the Agenda of Parliament.

Column: Achieving peace no matter what the cost

In an article titled "U.S. empire going way of Romans" in the Daily Trojan (March 30), the author made a convincing argument that the U.S. "empire" is in the process of a long, slow collapse. Over the past 50 years America's dominant power has declined rapidly from a post-World War II high, yet foreign policy has not evolved in response to the changed situation. This decade can be a turning point in stopping the erosion of American influence only if American policy can adjust to recognize this downward trend and take steps to reverse it.

The importance lies in distinguishing between accepting a new position as "a" leader in the global community and attempting to assert a no longer applicable position of "the" leader of the world. The United States needs to take a leading role in international organizations and can no longer afford to shrug off these organizations as irrelevant and/or subservient to the American "empire." By participating fully in organizations such as the World Trade Organization and the United Nations, the United States has the opportunity to be a powerful partner and through this role can accomplish more and achieve more goals of national interest.

Refixing our national development goals

His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the king of Bhutan, proclaimed that the ultimate purpose of government is to promote happiness of the people. So, to the king's belief Gross National Happiness (GNH) is more important than Gross National Product (GDP) and happiness should be given precedence over economic prosperity. Though not exactly quantifiable, GNH, not GDP, is the prime development objective in Bhutan . GNH has already provoked a mild uproar in the occident where people are bored with the burden of wealth and the ripple effects are being felt by both the poor and the rich all over the world. In Bangladesh we all know who is rich and who is poor by their income disparities. We make surveys in rural and urban areas to determine our level of poverty by counting, inter alia, households with or without creature comforts: creature comforts like television, freezer, telephone or roof made of corrugated iron sheets or bed affixed with frames for mosquito nets.

Strategists Bank on Budget-Neutral Policies

In a suite of offices three doors down Massachusetts Avenue from the Brookings Institution headquarters, Hillary Clinton's closest Wall Street allies are drawing up economic policy for the next Democratic administration.

The offices belong to the Hamilton Project, a small think tank created by Robert E. Rubin, Bill Clinton's Treasury secretary and key economic adviser, and former Treasury deputy secretary Roger C. Altman, who would be a front-runner for the same job in a new Clinton administration.

The project's research, so far, would be familiar to students of the first Clinton administration: creative, wonky proposals for softening the impact of globalization without interfering with international trade, most of them crafted with an eye to fiscal austerity and a balanced budget.
