Moscow No Match for Kiev
For Russians the current political imbroglio in Kiev was similar to struggle for power that took place in Moscow in September and October 1993. On the outside, the two episodes look almost identical. In both cases, the heads of state lost patience with endless opposition from the parliament and opted to call for new elections. Parliament refused to recognize the decision, the public was at odds with the political elite over its interpretation of the Constitution, and the specter of two separate governments trying to rule simultaneously hung over the country with all the usual negative consequences. The similarity between the two events is even more striking in that both arose a little more than two years after a revolutionary restructuring of national authority -- in August 1991 in Russia and in December 2004 in Ukraine.
Quality of Life in Bipolar Disorder: A Review of the Literature
A sizable body of research has now examined the complex relationship between quality of life (QoL) and depressive disorder. Uptake of QoL research in relation to bipolar disorder (BD) has been comparatively slow, although increasing numbers of QoL studies are now being conducted in bipolar populations. We aimed to perform a review of studies addressing the assessment of generic and health-related QoL in patients with bipolar disorder. A literature search was conducted in a comprehensive selection of databases including MEDLINE up to November 2004. Key words included: bipolar disorder or manic-depression, mania, bipolar depression, bipolar spectrum and variants AND quality of life, health-related QoL, functional status, well-being and variants. Articles were included if they were published in English and reported on an assessment of generic or health-related QoL in patients with BD.
'HIP' Companies Rate
It's no secret how Wall Street looks at a stock; most investment banking analysts play some version of the same numbers game. They gin up models of a company's financial drivers, then plug in data based on what they know or can guess about revenue and spending. The spreadsheet spits out projections of future cash flows and profits, which imply a certain valuation. .
Anderson forecasts economic slowdown
Policy discussions about the economic future of Los Angeles took center stage at the UCLA Anderson Forecast's quarterly forecast of the year, with area business and political leaders addressing the challenges they expect the city to face in upcoming years. Experts including L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and UCLA economists convened on campus Monday morning for a conference with the theme, “Solutions for the City." Economists from the Anderson Forecast opened the conference with their fourth report of the year. As they have in recent forecasts, economists predicted a slowdown in California's economy, but no recession. Edward Leamer, Director of the Anderson Forecast, said the housing market would likely continue to lag, but because the manufacturing sector is not expected to lose a significant number of jobs, the economy would not go into a full recession.
