On the Dissolution of Ukraine’s Parliament
The ultimate reason for Yushchenko's dissolution of the parliament is that he was pressed against the wall and had few other options left, other than leaving the political stage. He was not allowed to appoint his own chairman of the SBU, and two of his candidates for minister of foreign affairs were refuted. His veto on the Law on the Cabinet of Ministers was overruled. His strongest argument is that the new constitution does not allow deputies to leave one faction for another and stay in parliament. They should resign their mandate and offer their seats to the next member on the party list in such a case (as is done, for instance, in Sweden), he argues. The driving force behind the dissolution of the parliament has been Yulia Tymoshenko, who has been campaigning for it ever since she was excluded from the new government last August.
Come Out With Your Nukes Up!
Look at a map of the Middle East and find our two main warzones. Iraq on the left, Afghanistan on the right and- hello!- Iran in the middle. And to the south, the Persian Gulf where we've recently sent some more of our naval might to fortify the zone. We've got Iran surrounded, and this may be the most important reason that BushCo will not pull out of Iraq. .
Are You Really a Liberal?
Writers such as myself devote a lot of ink to the species known as liberals. And when you carry your banners openly on the field of battle, you define yourself and relinquish any pretense at that most illusory quality, impartiality. This places you in the crosshairs, although you can take solace in knowing that your adversaries will always miss left. Some of the liberals who contact me spew callow vitriol, at times peppered with language that would make a guttersnipe blush. But there’s another type of "liberal" respondent. This person is almost always civil, even when indignant. He’ll query me and wonder how I could ascribe all the qualities I do to liberalism, mystified that I would impugn an ideology possessed of but the most ethereal of virtues. Then, either confused or fancying me so, he’ll provide a dictionary definition, something always to the effect of: "lib-er-al-ism .
Central banks need clear policy rules: Poole
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis President William Poole said on Monday that a clear monetary policy rule provides a central bank with a powerful tool in its quest for sustainable growth and low unemployment. "Focus on monetary policy regimes and policy rules as the instrument of policy, not the near-term choice of the federal funds rate target," he said in prepared remarks to the New York chapter of the National Association for Business Economics. "If the (Federal Open Market) Committee communicates its objectives and strategy in a transparent and credible fashion, the bond market and other forward-looking financial markets will amplify the Committee's near-term decisions and thereby do a good deal of its work for it," he said. .
Why Hollywood portrays Muslims as villains
An article about the new film 300 and its neo-conservative pretensions (Battling evil with abs of steel, March 23) in Asia Times Online distracted me from usual pursuits and, indeed, the article I was writing at the time. While I have nothing to add to Eli Clifton's article, nor do I intend to partake the pleasure of watching the film in question, the current brouhaha does remind us of the rational economic thinking that underpins Hollywood as an industry. For all its liberal persuasions, the Hollywood film model is firmly rooted in the "if you are not with us, you are against us" line of neo-conservative thinking. Cinema is a two-dimensional art form, lending itself more to simplistic caricatures than either literature or its poor cousin theater ever could.
Three vie for seat in city's Third Ward
GALESBURG - Three candidates are squaring off for the Ward 3 seat on the Galesburg City Council in the April 17 consolidated election. Margaret Vasquez, who was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Alderman Russell "Monte" Gifford after his death, faces challengers Gary Swigert and Russell Fleming. The candidates were sent a questionnaire by The Register-Mail. Their responses are below. 1. What do you think of the efforts to clean up the former O.T. Johnson site? What would you do differently, if anything? Vasquez: The city is doing everything they are expected to do at the O.T. Johnson site. There are laws the city has to follow. There are environmental lows and structural problems that have to be taken care of first. Swigert: It's taken longer than I thought it should, but when you have to follow EPA guidelines for the asbestos in the bricks and debris, the effort has been good.
Turkey's EU Membership's Possible Impacts on the Middle East
One objection forwarded about Turkey's European Union (EU) membership is the prospect that the EU will border the Middle East. The implicit assumption that this objection carries is that the EU is distant to the Middle East and only through Turkey's membership can it border the region. Nevertheless, even at the present stage, the EU is much closer to Lebanon, Israel, and Palestine with the newly joined Cyprus. Similarly, the Greek islands, Malta, Italy, and Spain, all EU territories, are closer to North Africa than Turkey. Moroccan refugees virtually swim through the Gibraltar to seek asylum in Spain. It is possible to say that Turkish borders are much better defended when considering the ease in crossing the Spain-North Africa or Italy-North Africa boundaries. In line with the terrorism of the 1980s and 1990s, Turkey's Middle Eastern borders are highly protected and illegal trespassing is at a minimum.
