Youths to resist any "fake transition"

FIRST of all we wish as young Zimbabweans to salute the Southern African Development Community (SADC) for calling an urgent meeting to discuss the worsening political and economic crisis in our country.

We all want an immediate end to the crisis so we can bring back political and economic stability in the country that has been slowly bleeding to death over the past seven or so years.

Following the outcome of the meeting of the SADC leaders, we feel as young Africans that we have the moral and ideological obligation to voice our concerns and respond to the resolutions that came out of the extraordinary summit and any other such issues affecting members of the bloc.

From our point of view, there were some positive and negatives from the compiled resolutions from the 29 March Extra-Ordinary Summit of the Heads of State and Government of SADC in Tanzania regarding the Zimbabwe question.

European Union: 50 years of freedom

European Union celebrated its 50th anniversary this weekend. As we look back on its unprecedented achievements, we must also look forward to new challenges. Europe has been a force for good throughout the past 50 years. This anniversary is the moment to update our common project, which, in the age of globalization, is more relevant than ever. .

An appreciation of the historian, activist and writer who played a central role in defining modern American liberalism.

When Robert Kuttner, Robert Reich and Paul Starr first conceived the idea for a liberal magazine that was to become The American Prospect, one of the first people they consulted was Arthur Schlesinger. It was an obvious choice. As a historian, activist and writer on current affairs, Schlesinger had been an intellectual beacon for American liberals since the Forties. He agreed to become one of the magazine's founding sponsors, wrote a major article for our inaugural issue, and as recently as 2004, contributed an election post-mortem predicting that hubris and incompetence would be the Republicans' undoing.

Ghana tops the world in global survey on economic freedom

Economic freedom has a greater impact than foreign aid in helping people in poor nations escape poverty, according to the Economic Freedom of the World: 2006 Annual Report, by Vancouver-based Fraser Institute.

The research ranks Ghana first in the world for having made the most significant improvement in economic freedom over the last few years.

With 10 being the highest score, Ghana, for instance, has seen its rating moved up from 5.6 in 2001 to 6.3 in 2004, clocking the highest jump for the period, only matched by Barbados and Bulgaria, which moved up from 5.5 to 6.2 and 5.7 to 6.3, respectively, over the same period.

Commenting yesterday on Ghana's superior showing, Finance Minister Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu said it only goes to confirm the World Bank survey which placed Ghana among the top ten improved countries in which to do business.

US Dollar, Equities Hold Off On Final Moves For Existing Home ...

From Monday's NAHB Housing Market Index through Friday's Existing Home Sales, this entire week has centered on the massive and beleaguered housing sector. Now, heading into the final indicator on the economic calendar, economists are preparing for yet another disappointment. Considering all the related indicators that have hit the wires over past few days, the official consensus for the National Association of Realtor's existing home sales report has changed little. At the time of this writing, the market's official consensus called for a 2.5 percent drop in purchases of previously owned homes to an annual pace of 6.3 million units. If this contraction is realized, it would be the biggest drop in seven months and put a serious crimp in the outlook from the Federal Reserve and optimistic analysts who have reported tentative signs of a bottom.
