Study: Immigrants Add To Bottom Line Of State

BENTONVILLE -- Immigrants in Benton and Washington counties contributed $6.1 million to the state budget's bottom line in 2004, a study released this week shows. The study, commissioned by the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation and conducted by the Urban Institute in Washington, D.C., also showed Arkansas had the fastest-growing Hispanic population between 2000 and 2005, and about 51 percent of immigrants in the state are undocumented. The study is the first to take an in-depth look at the demographic characteristics and economic impact of immigration on Arkansas, a state that saw a 37 percent growth in immigrants during the first half of this decade to about 123,000.Northwest Arkansas experienced even higher immigrant growth rates. Benton and Washington counties saw 106 percent and 57 percent growth to 20,296 and 18,414 respectively, the study found.Bill Rahn, senior program manager with the Rockefeller Foundation, said the organization conducted the study to gather real numbers about a much-debated issue."We know there's this huge growth," Rahn said.

South Africa: Growth Beyond the Comfort Zone

IS GOVERNMENT's Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative (Asgi-SA) bold enough? One year after the launch of this important intervention, two questions must be asked: are Asgi-SA's priorities the right ones, and is there sufficient determination to identify and cut across competing priorities within the state? Asgi-SA aims to halve poverty and unemployment in SA by 2014. Its approach is to identify constraints on growth and encourage initiatives to remove these blockages. Asgi-SA was widely welcomed at its launch and is a positive intervention. Selecting the binding constraints was difficult for policy makers, who are rightly concerned with losing focus if the list is too long. Six obstacles to growth were identified, encouraging government to focus on the most important issues.

The chosen constraints, with some accompanying comments from senior officials in the Presidency, are:

Boeing Integrated Materials Management opens Asia Regional Center ...

Boeing's Integrated Materials Management helps maintain and manage an airline's spare parts inventory, providing items to the airline mechanic as needed. The IMM team manages supplier-owned inventory at airline maintenance locations which results in reduced inventory holding and other supply-chain management costs at the airline.

The opening of the regional center enhances the current support of on-site teams throughout the globe and improves communications and visibility of inventory within the IMM network which directly benefits the customer. The center will provide around-the-clock support to all IMM customers and network suppliers.

"We are very excited to enlarge our footprint in the Asia region," said, Joe Brummitt, director of Integrated Materials Management for Boeing.

The secret to a long and happy life is love

It is a simple question, but it may just reveal whether or not you will live to a ripe old age: does somebody love you?

Those who can confidently answer "yes" are significantly more likely to be alive for the next 10 years than those who feel all alone. For love is a more accurate factor than smoking in predicting life expectancy, according to David Halpern, a senior policy adviser to the UK government.

His work on the science of happiness is increasingly influencing government. He says adored people are happy people, and the happier they are, the longer and more productive lives they lead.

Such ideas may raise eyebrows, but they are being taken increasingly seriously within government as the startling impact of happiness on citizens' lives X and lifespans X becomes clearer.

Nigeria: Graft: UK Jails Dariye's Accomplice

A new twist emerged in an alleged money laundering case levelled against Governor Joshua Dariye of Plateau State, when a London Court found guilty, convicted and sentenced the embattled governor's alleged accomplice, Mrs. Joyce Bamidele Oyebanjo to three years imprisonment.

The jail term, handed down by a Southwark Crown Court Magistrate to Oyebanjo, a housing tenancy manager, from Teresa Gardens, Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, UK, marked a first conviction by the Proceeds of Corruption Unit of the London Metropolitan Police in their investigation of Dariye.
