Dollar Slides on China Sanctions

U.S. 10-year Treasury bond prices closed slightly lower on a high-range day today. Consumer spending and a positive business activity report helped to boost confidence in the U.S. economy. Bonds have been trading in a fairly tight range for about a month, and despite the whipsawing, prices closed within normal range today. Housing reports continue to be a major focus for traders, who see the housing sector as a broad economic indicator of U.S. economic health.

The dollar fell against the euro and the yen today, after U.S. imposed trade sanctions on China. The protectionist measure caused to the dollar to fall against the major currencies. The yen has been the key focus for currency traders lately, as the ramifications of the yen carry trade are felt during global selloffs, when traders buy back the yen to cover riskier positions.

NAACP and National Association of Home Builders Address Affordable ...

Co-hosted by the NAACP and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), the roundtable discussion drew expertise from leadership at the nation's leading housing advocacy groups. "The roundtable discussion was a critical first step in determining how we move the affordable housing issue from a policy discussion at the national level to a movement that makes a real difference in the lives of families across the nation," said Dennis Hayes, Interim President and CEO of the NAACP. "We view this issue from a broader context, and seek to determine the larger social costs of current development patterns. We don't want to encourage policies that promote economic disassociation." Discussion ranged from sub-prime lending to the production of affordable rental housing, from weak federal housing programs to local zoning practices.

Management approaches in Indian companies

In this article, we take up the "whats" of the strategic management approaches in Indian companies. Such approaches would suitably address the three "whys" or requirements outlined earlier, i.e. temporality - having an appropriate strategic horizon ; contextuality - developing adequate responses to the major trends and imperatives of the Indian business context; and, originality - enabling novel thinking and difficult-copy advantages in Indian companies. We bridge and draw upon the theory and the practice of strategic management, as per the Indian situation. The Indian business environment has seen extraordinary change, since the onset of economic reforms in the early-1990 s. While the '90s was a decade of transition, the 'market oriented-globally integrated' economic framework has now stabilised.

`Study house' for tribal students mooted

KOCHI: A recent study by the Kochi-based Centre for Socio-Economic & Environmental Studies (CSES) has suggested the creation of a new institution called the `Paditha Veedu' (study house) in each tribal `ooru'/settlement/colony to improve the quality of education of Scheduled Tribe children. The study has made other suggestions for improving the quality of education for tribal children. The TTC curriculum in districts with tribal concentration should have tribal content. The study suggests that the continuation of alternative schooling under the Sarva Shikshan Abhiyan (single teacher multi-grade schools) needs to be seriously debated. Teacher appointments in tribal areas should be done with emphasis on tribal preferences. Traditional skills and new soft skills should be transmitted through formal school system.

Catholic Charities-sponsored conference examines the state's (and ...

Poverty for Catholic Christians is above all a moral problem, which "our faith calls us to respond to the cry of the poor with charity and justice, both at the personal level and in creating systemic change," said Father Larry Snyder, president of Catholic Charities USA, during an Orange County conference on March 29.

"Poverty in California: Our Catholic Response" drew some 40 local Catholic Charities workers to Irvine from the dioceses of Orange and San Bernardino and the Los Angeles Archdiocese.

During his afternoon PowerPoint presentation, Father Snyder drew heavily from "Poverty in America: A Threat to the Common Good," a policy paper Catholic Charities adopted last year, calling for a radical decrease in the nation's poverty by at least half by 2020.

"Poverty in the United States is a moral and social wound in the soul of our country," he said, quoting from the paper's executive summary.
