Economic Forum Meet World Economic Policy Policy Public

Ayoon wa Azan ( Before Meeting Him )

The April 12, 2007, issue of the magazine the 'New York Review of Books' contains an article entitled "On Israel, America and AIPAC", by George Soros, the world-known businessman. It begins with an accurate and objective analysis of the Palestinian situation, the national unity government and the Arab initiative for peace with Israel. It continues to review the extremism of the official US-Jewish lobby and its dominance of the US policy in the Middle East, with all the harms this has caused to the objective of Middle East peace, and Israel's own interests.

I had heard of Georges Soros before meeting him. While the world of economics did not concern me in the least, I have become interested in his activities because some of his political stances and charity activities. Then I followed up on his participation in the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, and I found that he was as I had heard about him, or even better.

Officials hope to woo firms in India

PONTIAC -- Two Oakland County officials will make the county's first foray into India this month as part of an 11-day trade mission to attract businesses not just to southeastern Michigan but Oakland in particular.

The trip, organized by the economic development arm of the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce, will be primarily automotive focused, though the delegation also will meet with companies in the life sciences, alternative energy and information technology fields.

India, with 1.1 billion people, is the second most populated country in the world and has the second fastest-growing large economy. It has a highly educated work force and an economy already very oriented toward information technology and research and development, said Maureen Krauss, the county's deputy director of economic development and community affairs.

Climate protection in China: Siemens expects increased demand for ...

China is facing major challenges: rapid economic growth, increasing urbanization and major events like the up-coming 2008 Olympics and Expo 2010 are creating a need for advanced infrastructure. The main focus is on the fields of energy and transportation. At the 2007 session of the People's Congress, the Chinese government announced that conserving energy and raw materials, and protecting the environment were priority issues. Siemens sees this as a major opportunity. “The Siemens portfolio in China is ideally positioned for providing a modern, sustainable and environmentally compatible infrastructure," said Dr. Richard Hausmann, President and CEO of Siemens Ltd., China. “We are optimistic that, by 2010, we will double the sales of our Regional Company in China from their current level of roughly €5 billion."

The technical know-how to handle the climate problem already exists.

FOREX VIEW: US Econ Worries Could Drag Dollar Down Next Week

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The dollar, still licking its wounds after dropping to a two-year low against the euro Thursday, could see more downside next week on persistent worries about the U.S. economy. But U.S.-centric issues aren't the only possible knock on the greenback. Economies in the euro zone have started to outperform, providing incentives for investors to trade in their dollars for the 13-nation currency. "We've had plenty of positive data out of Europe recently that still hasn't been adequately reflected in its prices," said Camilla Sutton, currency strategist at Scotia Capital in Toronto. "So we see the potential for more dollar-weakening next week, but at a slow pace." Of course, there's still more action this week. An important report Friday on U.S. non-farm payrolls could spark dollar-selling if market whispers of a low number prove true.

Uduaghan should take human development seriously

A political analyst, David Okotie, has outlined areas Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Delta State could focus on to make impact if he becomes governor on May 29.

He advised Uduaghan to take human capital development seriously if becomes governor.

Human development
For human capital development in Delta State to proceed along the right course, it should be conceived and executed within the framework of the State's Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (SEEDS). In addition to this, it should be in line, with the Niger Delta Development Commission's programme for the rapid transformation of the region. At this stage it is imperative to propose to Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan- the PDP governorship candidate, who appears to be the most popular - to ensure he harmonizes his policies and programmes with progressive policies and programmes of past administrations in the state.

Debtor Nation

"News Dissector" Danny Schechter edits MediaChannel.org, where this article first appeared. His film "In Debt We Trust," is now in release. Comments to Dissector@mediachannel.org

Well over a year ago, I wrote an article for Harvard's journalism journal Nieman Reports complaining about deeply flawed media coverage of credit and debt issues in America.

"There is a credit divide in America that fuels our economic divide," I wrote, warning of a potential economic implosion because so many Americans are trapped by a debt squeeze. I was not alone in projecting a crisis, although my focus was more on the failure of many media outlets to track the problem and ask deeper questions.

"Ours has become a nation in which the carrot of instant affluence is quickly menaced by the harsh stick of bill collectors, lawsuits, and foreclosures," I argued.
