Courts, public central to battling intellectual property violations

Thoi bao Kinh te Viet Nam (Viet Nam Economic Times) spoke with several officials regarding intellectual property rights, and public and Government roles in dealing with counterfeit goods.

Hoang Van Phong, science and technology minister

The courts should play a more important role in dealing with IPR violations. Currently however, we only have administrative measures to deal with such violations. If a person violates intellectual property rights, the case uses an arbitrator. Under IPR laws, together with administrative measures, violators must compensate the copyright or patent owner and consumers, but penalties still fall short.

Viet Nam is considering whether to treat such violations as criminal cases. Whether a case is a civil or criminal will be determined by the courts.

Looking Beyond Petroleum: A Stronger Case For Economic ...

This paper has been prepared by APICORP Research to support a communication to the forthcoming Seventh Doha Forum on Democracy, Development and Free Trade (23-25 April 2007). It is an adaptation and generalization to the MENA region of an original analysis developed by Ali Aissaoui in: Algeria: The Political Economy of Oil & Gas, published by the Oxford University Press in 2001 for the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies. The paper is published concomitantly in APICORPs monthly Economic Commentary dated April 2007. Comments or feedback may be sent to research@apicorp-arabia.com.

It is widely admitted that specialization in a single economic sector, understood as the antonym of diversification, is a source of high risks. If the single sector involves natural resources extraction such as petroleum then these risks stem first and foremost from the exposure to the uncertainties of the international markets.

The F-Word; Feminism holds different meanings for today's teen girls

Ask a teen if she describes herself as a feminist: You'll either get a puzzled look or she'll snap her head back as if you just slapped her.

For teenage girls today, feminist has become the f-word. In fact, that's what some women's magazines now call it.

In a world where girls want - no, need - to be thought of as pretty to count, it's like asking if they would describe themselves as ugly or haters of boys.

For others, they've never heard of this thing - a feminist. Is that like a racist, women who are against men?

There's plenty of confusion about what feminism actually is.

Boiled down to its bare bones, the Merriam Webster Online Dictionary describes it as the "theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes."

A feminist is a person who believes and perhaps puts into practice through the way they live their life an idea that women and men should be treated equally.

Forex Changes Having Desired Economic Impact -IMF Economist

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Currency revaluations appear to be spurring a healthy rebalancing of activity among net-exporting countries and net-importing ones, the chief economist for the International Monetary Fund said Thursday. The goal of foreign exchange adjustments among major trading partners should be to increase domestic demand within net-exporting countries and boost domestic saving in net-importing countries, IMF Chief Economist Simon Johnson said at a media briefing on parts of the Fund's semi-annual World Economic Outlook report. "It's very important to get it right because that rebalancing in demand, if you get it, means you'll unwind the global imbalances without slowing the global economy," Johnson said. "That's what we're aiming to get, and that's where we think we are heading with the current alignment of policy." The U.S.

Determined to sell

As minister of investment, a member of the ruling National Democratic Party's Policies Committee and chairman of the party's Economy Committee, Mahmoud Mohieddin is in a unique position to articulate and draft Egypt's future economic and political agendas.

In a roundtable discussion with Al-Ahram Weekly , Mohieddin showed enthusiasm about the outcome of economic reform and the long- term effects of the constitutional amendments. He noted that for 30 years the state failed to run public sector companies efficiently, and that keeping a loss-making company under the state umbrella is considered a crime.

Bombarded by criticism over the past three years for selling what people view as the country's crown jewels does not seem to impede Mohieddin's determination to stay on the privatisation track.
