The Role of Kenyan Diaspora in Constructing a New Politics of ...

India and China provide the two great Diasporas of the world. India has a great presence in the Western mind. The Chinese Diaspora is culturally loyal to Chinese civilization but often has been said to have little regard for the dictatorship that runs the homeland. By contrast, democracy is at the very core of India’s national being. Millions of Westerners have read Indian novels in English. This is not true of Chinese novels. Indian movies, which are popular all over Asia, are starting to penetrate Western consciousness (Sheridan, 2006).

All this is happening since the 1990s when the overseas community emerged as an acceptable ethnic identity around the world, be it the well-mobilized Chinese overseas community or the Jewish one. Overseas or Diaspora Chinese have become an economic asset for the development of China in the past two decades, investing substantially in their homeland.

Release No. 0072.07

SEC. MIKE JOHANNS: Thank you very much. Well, thank you very much, President Jischke. I really appreciate the opportunity to be here today. I have to admit in front of this crowd with some trepidation that many years ago when I was looking around for undergraduate schools I did not have the good sense to come to Purdue. But I did do the next best thing, ladies and gentlemen. And I told the last group I spoke to that I thank the Dear Lord for Indiana every night when I lay down and go to bed. Now you probably wonder why I'm gushing about this. It's because I married a Hoosier, so I did the next best thing.

Well, I do want to say thanks for the excellent tour. This is one of those tours where you walk in, you know you're going to have a limited amount of time, and you wish you could spend all afternoon.

Iran Situation Hits Stock Markets

The New York Dow Jones index dropped one percent in recent weeks, to 12.354 points. Nasdaq dropped 1.1 percent, to 2.422 points. In March, Dow's value grew 0.7 percent and Nasdaq's, 0.2 percent. However, their quarterly performance was the worst in the last two years. Dow suffered a 0.9 percent loss in value in the first quarter this year, while Nasdaq only grew 2.6 percent.

Escalating tensions between Iran and the west are making investors nervous and they caused the growth of oil barrel prices above 67 dollars in mid-week. Investors were discouraged by the latest news that London and Tehran have not yet reached an agreement on the freeing of the 15 British sailors and marines whom Iran has been holding captive for some time now. The shares of industrial companies such as Boeing, 3M and General Electric suffered the biggest losses, along with retail, financial, and transport companies.

The American Central Fed Bank chairman Ben Bernanke's statement that he is concerned about inflation and uncertainties related to the US economy has also put pressure on blue chip shares prices.

The Meroitic Ethiopian Origins of the Modern Oromo Nation

This paper deals, among others, with the development of Meroitic studies, the Meroitic civilization, the destruction of the city of Meroe, the dispersal of the Meroitic people after the collapse of their state, the Christianization of the post Meroitic states, the migration of the remnants of the Meroitic people in the direction of the Blue Nile and their possible relation of ancestry with the modern Cushitic language speaking Oromo nation. It must be stated clearly at the outset that the issue of Meroitic ancestry of the Oromo nation has not been considered, much less published in an academic journal or scholarly books. The paper was first presented in an academic conference organized by the Oromo Studies Association. Footnotes have been added recently.

1. The Development of the Meroitic Studies, the History of Kush and Meroe, and the Efforts to Decipher the Meroitic Scripture

Interest in what was Ethiopia for the Ancient Greeks and Romans, i.e.

At the UN, Secretive Diplomats, Shy Dervis, UNDP Sings As Ms ...

UNITED NATIONS, April 5 -- At the UN those that can, try to make their own rules. It starts upon entering the building. For weeks now, all entrants have had to swipe their UN i.d. cards. Some, citing privacy, has asked where this swiping data goes. While the question's yet to be answered, the Ambassadors to the UN have quietly made such to take care of themselves. In paragraph 27 of a little noticed resolution on the "security management system," the General Assembly "decide[d] that data related to representatives of Member States... shall automatically be deleted from the standardized access control system after... 24 hours." Anyone other than Ambassadors, they can keep the data as long as they want, and apparently use it for any purpose whatsoever.

At the UN, many make their own rules.

Lombard Village Board

Two candidates are running for the District 2 seat on the Lombard Village Board of Trustees. District 2 includes neighborhoods in the south-central area of Lombard west of Main Street. A map of the districts can be found at www.villageoflombard.org.

Incumbent Richard J. Dick Tross has served on the board since 1987. Challenger Keith Giagnorio is a Lombard Park District trustee.

The Daily Herald posed questions to the candidates. These are their edited responses.

Q. Why are you running for this office, whether for re-election or election the first time? Is there a particular issue that motivates you, and if so, what? What will be your main priority?

Giagnorio. I am running for trustee to bring sound decision-making back to the village board. I appreciate the contributions my opponent has made to the village, but it is obvious that a change is needed.
