S. Korea mulls compensating farmers for losses from FTA
SEOUL, April 3 (Yonhap) -- South Korea is considering providing subsidies to some of the agriculture sector that are expected to be hurt by increased U.S. imports in the wake of a bilateral free trade deal, officials said Tuesday. The move comes after the countries sealed a landmark free trade agreement (FTA) Monday, which is feared to result in an inflow of cheap U.S. agricultural imports and damage domestic farmers. "We are considering offering direct payments to farmers for losses stemming from an influx of imports due to the FTA," the Ministry of Finance and Economy said in a statement after a weekly economic policy coordination meeting. The ministry said that it will gather opinions from related agencies to fine-tune the move before finalizing it.

Of Public Inflation Views
WASHINGTON -- Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Donald Kohn Friday defended the central bank's use of various gauges of public inflation expectations to determine monetary policy, while acknowledging uncertainty in measuring the public's outlook. "Inflation expectations are among the most important variables policy makers monitor, but we do not have answers to our most basic questions about them," Mr. Kohn said in the text of remarks prepared for delivery at a monetary policy conference sponsored by the University of Chicago and Brandeis University. Mr. Kohn said questions remain about the accuracy of available measures for consumers' and business' price expectations; the ... .

A nexus of history
The drive by the United States to democratise the Middle East has caused widespread damage, and one of its most pernicious features is the simplified spin it puts on local crises and conflicts, citing supposedly immutable ethnic or religious criteria as an explanation for political processes. This approach reduces the current stand-off in Lebanon to opposition between pro-western communities in favour of democratisation and a community inspired by Islamist ideas and working closely (...) .
State budget crisis: Opportunity for leadership
There is great angst and anxiety in Michigan today. Seems that every economic indicator one looks at is heading in the wrong direction. Home foreclosures, bankruptcies and unemployment are up, home sales (if you can sell) and personal income are down and the domestic auto industry and auto suppliers are shedding jobs like many of us wish we could peel off a few pounds. And the very jobs that we believe are our future and salvation are pulling up stakes and leaving town as well. Comerica is heading west, Chrysler may go east to China, while Pfizer's departure from Michigan has many of its employees, and local and state government officials, heading to the medicine cabinet. .
Globalization benefits wealthy exporters at expense of farmers ...
WASHINGTON So-called "free trade" agreements are not free at all, victimizing the poor while benefiting the wealthy, says a new report by Oxfam International, the coalition fighting poverty, suffering and social injustice around the world. Nevertheless, a trend toward regional agreements and globalization continues, with an average of two bilateral or multilateral investment treaties being signed every week, according to the study. "In an increasingly globalized world, these agreements seek to benefit rich-country exporters and firms at the expense of poor farmers and workers, with grave implications for the environment and development," the report said. (Story continues below) There are more than 250 regional and bilateral agreements in place today and many more are in the works, according to Oxfam.
