S. Korea mulls compensating farmers for losses from FTA
SEOUL, April 3 (Yonhap) -- South Korea is considering providing subsidies to some of the agriculture sector that are expected to be hurt by increased U.S. imports in the wake of a bilateral free trade deal, officials said Tuesday. The move comes after the countries sealed a landmark free trade agreement (FTA) Monday, which is feared to result in an inflow of cheap U.S. agricultural imports and damage domestic farmers. "We are considering offering direct payments to farmers for losses stemming from an influx of imports due to the FTA," the Ministry of Finance and Economy said in a statement after a weekly economic policy coordination meeting. The ministry said that it will gather opinions from related agencies to fine-tune the move before finalizing it.

Divided we stand
I have studiously avoided commenting on this whole idea of a Global Filipino Nation until I have read enough about it and heard the pros and cons. Lucky for me, Philippine News has been a great source of information from both sides of the debate the overseas Filipinos who insist on having a hand in how Manila should be governed, and scornful Philippine-based Filipinos who say, No way. I thought it was just another one of those issues Filipinos usually disagree on just like corruption, contraception, and what to do with the Marcos wealth until I met up with a journalist-friend in New York. This fellow Asian held the issue to my face like a mirror. Whats happening to your country? Everyone seems to be fighting each other its now Filipinos versus overseas Filipinos, he said. Are we seeing a balkanization out there? Balkanization? I dont usually think depressing thoughts when Im having my black forest latte, but this one hit me.
Mental problems need redress
The shock following the revelation that Dr Prakitpao Tomchitchong, a rich and successful owner of a famous tutorial school, is suffering from a mental illness _ and the scandal and family drama that followed _ may have eased following the court verdict that his treatment be continued. Our awareness that mental instability is becoming a very real and serious threat to our society should not be allowed to fade, however. The scandalous elements aside, the case of Dr Prakitpao is made even more potent by the seemingly "perfect" life he had. A well-educated man who sacrificed his own career in medicine to revive his family's near bankrupt tutorial school business, to make it bigger and more successful commercially, Dr Prakitpao represents a success story in modern society. Before the young university student Pemika Veerachatraksit joined the fray and tarnished the doctor's picture-perfect public image, Dr Prakitpao was often presented in the media as a family man, happily married to his high-school sweetheart with two children.

Management approaches in Indian companies
In this article, we take up the "whats" of the strategic management approaches in Indian companies. Such approaches would suitably address the three "whys" or requirements outlined earlier, i.e. temporality - having an appropriate strategic horizon ; contextuality - developing adequate responses to the major trends and imperatives of the Indian business context; and, originality - enabling novel thinking and difficult-copy advantages in Indian companies. We bridge and draw upon the theory and the practice of strategic management, as per the Indian situation. The Indian business environment has seen extraordinary change, since the onset of economic reforms in the early-1990 s. While the '90s was a decade of transition, the 'market oriented-globally integrated' economic framework has now stabilised.
